Emily Maitlis has apologized for retweeting a post criticizing the “sheer Trumpian pettiness” of the government’s response to Downing Street parties.
The Newsnight presenter, 51, shared a tweet from former Tory cabinet minister Rory Stewart, in which he said “it’s hard to see how well the party or our political system can survive”.
Mr Stewart was responding to a video of an interview in which Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries defended Boris Johnson’s handling of the release of Sue Gray’s ‘update’.
Maitlis wrote: “I deleted my previous retweet below and would like to apologize for the hurt I caused.
“For the avoidance of doubt, I accept that I should have added additional context – it was hastily retweeted – and I was wrong to do so.”
In doing so, she shared Mr Stewart’s original post.
A BBC spokeswoman declined to comment further.
In June, Maitlis was reprimanded by the broadcaster after she shared a post from Piers Morgan on social media which he called “clearly controversial”.
A statement in the complaints section of the BBC’s website criticized the journalist and presenter’s social media activity after she shared the former Good Morning Britain presenter Morgan’s post in February.
The Twitter post said, “If failing to quarantine properly is punishable by 10 years in prison, what is the punishment for failing to properly protect the country from a pandemic?”
BBC director-general Tim Davie warned staff about his use of social media when he took office at the end of 2020.
In the same year, the BBC ruled that a monologue by Maitlis on Newsnight about the row over Dominic Cummings’ trip to Durham breached impartiality rules.
