Labor suspends MP over accusation of racist comments to journalist – POLITICO

UK Labor MP Neil Coyle has had the party whip suspended over allegations he made racist remarks to a journalist last week, a party spokesperson said Friday.

“The Labor Party expects the highest standards of behavior from all our MPs and we take allegations of this sort very seriously,” the spokesperson said. “Accordingly the chief whip has now suspended the Labor whip from Neil Coyle pending an investigation.”

Coyle is accused of making Sinophobic comments toward Henry Dyer, a British-Chinese reporter for Insider, on February 1 in Strangers’ Bar in the House of Commons.

During their interaction, Dyer said he “gently pushed back” at Coyle for propagating an anti-Chinese trope, before Coyle reacted by telling Dyer he could tell “from how you look like you’ve been giving renminbi [Chinese currency] to Barry Gardiner,” a Labor MP who had received funding from a suspected Chinese spy.

Coyle told the Mirror, “I’m very sorry for my insensitive comments, have apologized to everyone involved and will be cooperating fully with the investigation.”
