The Batman director Matt Reeves has spoken on the backlash towards the movie’s lengthy runtime, defending it as “immersive” and revealing that it was planned to be even longer.
Back in January, it was confirmed that the new DC movie would run at nearly three hours, making it the longest solo Batman movie and the longest superhero movie ever behind Avengers: Endgame.
While this generated a lot of chatter, Reeves has addressed the decision in an interview with The New York Times.

“Once you see the movie, I think that ceases to be an issue,” he told the publication. “It’s immersive, it takes you along and it keeps you engrossed.”
The director also revealed that he tested it with preview audiences, and “it was once longer”.
Reeves recently chatted to Digital Spy about his take on the Caped Crusader, explaining that he wanted to avoid an origin tale with The Batman.

“While I knew that this was going to be a new iteration, I didn’t think there was any possible way to see the murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne again, you couldn’t see the pearls in the cement, and so that was critical,” he said.
“I also just thought I wanted to make sure we were doing something fresh and different, so I wanted him to be an unformed Batman. While we weren’t doing an origin tale, there was a place for him to have an arc.

“We really leaned into this idea of it being early days and he’s kind of like addicted to being Batman, he’s compelled and has this compulsion and doesn’t understand the degree to which revenge is a part of why he’s doing it and how personal his mission is.”
In Digital Spy’s five-star review of the movie, we said: “It’s easy to get Batman wrong, but Reeves never even threatens to do so. The Batman is an enthralling, chilling and fresh new take on the iconic DC hero that’ll leave you desperate for another visit to this impeccably-crafted world.”
The Batman has a release date of March 4, 2022.
