President Joe Biden is steering a difficult course. Inflation rates are up because of supply shortages, the COVID pandemic although lessening, is still an issue, and along with civil unrest, great division between political parties, and needed police reform, Biden inherited a government teetering on the demise of our democracy.

Right now the situation in Ukraine demands attention as mobilizations of armies in Europe have shown in the past to create massive conflict. I’d like to suggest that the Ukraine incident had it’s beginning at the Trump – Putin conference in Helsinki. At the end of the conference Donald Trump stood shoulder to shoulder with Putin and basically proclaimed that “Putin was a very powerful man and he believed him that there was no interference in the 2016 election.”

This statement flew in the face of our best intelligence from all US agencies. Our president made a statement that John McCain said was the most shameful statement ever issued by any American president. I received the impression of the wolf, Putin standing next to Trump an overweight sacrificial lamb at the conference ending. Trump was totally outclassed in experience, and geopolitical knowledge, and in statesmanship by the former KGB agent.

The weakness demonstrated by our defeated ex-president allowed Putin to solidify the opinion that he could continue the strongman tactics and repression of the former Soviet Union, not only with his people, but in nations that border his country.

President Biden has inherited the damage orchestrated by Trump, a man that put his own personal finances over country, his ego over democracy, and his thin skin against our Constitution. Russia’s current build up against Ukraine and Putin’s willingness to use aggressive military action can be squarely laid at the feet of “Don the con.”
