Manchester United have expanded their manager search to include two current Premier League head coaches.
The interim reign of Ralf Rangnick has been undermined by dressing-room leaks and a lack of clarity over his future position, with the German said to be taking an undefined two-year role as consultant at the end of the current season.
Rangnick had found some success in terms of results at Old Trafford, only losing one of his first 17 matches in charge and strengthening their Champions League qualification chances.
But a chastening 4-1 derby defeat to Manchester City has plunged the club back into crisis mode, while potentially hastening their manager search.
Ralf Rangnick tops Premier League losers for first time
Paris Saint-Germain coach Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag of Ajax are known to be at the top of that shortlist, with Real Madrid’s Carlo Ancelotti considered a short-term option.
The i exclusively reports that the net has been cast over the Premier League to include ‘outstanding domestic options’, throwing up three more names in the hope Manchester United can ‘make a relatively quick decision’.
Ralph Hasenhuttl ‘has a high-profile supporter in Rangnick’ and will be included on a long list of contenders, along with the ‘innovative’ Graham Potter.
Brighton have lost their last four Premier League games and only won in eight; Brendan Rodgers might consider himself unfortunate to be ‘ruled out of contention’ due to his Leicester ‘struggles’.
Other reports shed more light on the current situation at Manchester United, including how the players feel sabotaged by the degree of uncertainty in the dugout.
The Times describe members of the squad as ‘becoming increasingly concerned about the direction of the club,’ citing the ‘negative effect’ that ‘the lack of clarity’ has had on some.
Paul Hirst writes that ‘the squad acknowledge that they have not been at their best recently’ – a line which is echoed by BBC Sport.
Simon Stones says ‘United’s players understand much of the responsibility for the current predicament lies with them’.
But he adds detail on ‘a belief they are not being helped’ by the opaque nature of the managerial predicament.
‘The situation is adding to a general air of uncertainty around Old Trafford, with numerous players becoming disenchanted with life at the club,’ he continues. So this is what a rebuild with no plan looks like.
