Shazam! 2 Director Planned to Blame a Suit Continuity Error on The Flash

The Flash was set to release prior to Shazam! Fury of the Gods. A schedule change now impacts director David F. Sandberg’s plans to blame Barry Allen.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods director David F. Sandberg planned to blame the heroes’ new suits on the Flash.

2022 was set to be the year of heroes for DC, being that four live-action blockbusters were supposed to release, including The Flash, while the Shazam! sequel was slated for 2023. Now, three of those films have been hit with delays until next year, but Fury of the Gods has actually moved up to this December. The movie will give the Shazam Family new suits, something which Sandberg said on Twitter that there will be no explanation for. If asked why the change wasn’t addressed in the film, the director’s original plan was to blame Barry Allen, but now the hero’s solo film will no longer be debuting beforehand.

Shazam 2 never addresses why their suits are different now. If anyone would ask my plan was to say it’s because Barry messed with the timeline but now we come out before Flash so I’ll say the wizard did it.

“[Shazam! Fury of the Gods] never addresses why their suits are different now,” Sandberg wrote on Twitter. “If anyone would ask my plan was to say it’s because Barry messed with the timeline but now we come out before [The Flash] so I’ll say the wizard did it.” The director’s new plan to make the wizard Shazam the costume change’s scapegoat would require a feat of resurrection, being that the character turned to ash and seemingly died in the previous film. However, blaming the Flash for unexplained changes is a popular and recurring DC joke among fans.

Following actor Grant Gustin’s portrayal of the hero on The CW’s The Flash, a common meme choice is to poke fun at the scarlet speedster’s knack for messing up timelines. On the show, Barry has traveled back in time and made changes to characters’ entire histories, indirectly causing others to die and more. Gustin’s version of the Flash has actually met his DC Extended Universe equivalent — portrayed by actor Ezra Miller — in the Arrowverse continuity during the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover event.

In the upcoming film The Flash, Miller’s speedster appears to be taking after Gustin’s with Multiversal plotlines. The film will feature multiple Batman (both actors Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton), Supergirl, another Flash and more. One rumor for the now delayed film claims that its story will serve as a reset button for the DCEU, wiping out all of director Zack Snyder’s previous movies in the universe. This list includes Man of Steel (2013), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and Justice League (2017).

The Flash is now racing into theaters on June 23, 2023, while Shazam! Fury of the Gods strikes cinemas on Dec. 16, 2022.
