What are you supposed to do as a football coach when your team scores an 89th-minute winner?

Politely clap like you are a slightly amused attendee on Center Court at Wimbledon and move on?

Well, if your name is Thomas Tuchel, but if you work at Anfield, all bets are off! Running to the halfway line from your technical area is absolutely fine. In fact, you’ll be lauded for it, and wide media coverage will lap up your emotional connection to supporters.

Of course, this refers to some criticism leveled at Chelsea’s head coach after he passionately celebrated Kai Havertz’s winner on Sunday against Newcastle.

Tuchel sprinted onto the pitch, quite clearly in view of the Newcastle dugout and Jason Tindall, Eddie Howe’s assistant, who Tuchel had confronted during the game.

But beyond that, this was a raw burst of emotion from the German who has dealt with one of the most challenging weeks in Chelsea’s history admirably.

“Not more than in the last game. I had the feeling that it is our responsibility because we can’t influence the situation.” Tuchel reflected when asked if the atmosphere around the club impacted the performance.

“We are not responsible for the situation, so at some point, it’s our responsibility because we are in the spotlight and have these games to focus on what we do well.

“It’s a responsibility to our talent but also to every employee of Chelsea. There are a lot of people that I see on a daily basis who are worried and who work for decades. They are not so famous, but they are worried for a pretty close future, wonder if things will be alright.

“So for them, it’s important to have the attitude right and also to focus on that and see the responsibility and what this means to these people. Even if it’s just for 90 minutes.”

Tuchel has become even more beloved amongst Chelsea supporters in the past two weeks based on his words and actions.

To some, he is already their favorite manager/coach of all time. His words have helped soothe fans during a difficult fortnight that altered the course of the club’s history.

He has given inspirational quotes about the impact of sanctions and simply having enough shirts to play and petrol to drive to the games.

Even suggesting on Sunday, he’d drive the coach himself.

Maybe it was the stress of these weeks bursting out or simply a coach enjoying one of his team’s most dramatic moments this season.

The hypocrisy over the coverage is clear. When Jurgen Klopp burst onto the pitch at Anfield to celebrate Divock Origi’s 96th minute, was he being disrespectful? All the times he’s done similar, and it’s always painted in a positive, endearing light.

What’s different for Tuchel?

And moments like these only further the bond between a coach and supporters. Think back to Jose Mourinho’s classic sprints down the touchline, Antonio Conte’s mad dash into the East Stand Lower against Arsenal in 2017.

Football is about these moments of unrestrained celebration. Tuchel did not try to provoke the Newcastle bench by gesturing towards them or saying anything antagonistic about Howe or Tindall after.

I would have expected the same reaction if Newcastle had scored a 90th-minute winner.
