Toronto-based Oxford Properties is one of the largest privately held real estate development and ownership companies in North America. It makes sense then that they would want to promote the value of the office. But what was likely a well intentioned campaign to welcome their workers back to the office was met with backlash on social media when some of their light hearted signs were posted by an employee. The signs had satirical phrases like “Miss your sweatpants yet” and “Bet your is dog missing you.”
The employee that posted a pic of the signs on Twitter had this to say about them, “In the lobby of an office building in Toronto. I guess to make sure employees are flooded with resentment the instant they walk in the door?”
The tweet got over 150,000 likes and was viewed millions of times. The comments were almost exclusively reprimanding the company for the signs and became a place for people to share their own resentment about returning to the office.
Oxford Properties has since taken the signs down and apologized with this statement on their website: “The campaign should have not made it into production and we sincerely apologize to any customers, colleagues and members of the public that were offended.”
The backlash against the campaign is yet another indication of the preference of many workers to continue to work from home. There are certainly things that companies can do to welcome and entice people back to offices but apparently, a snarky sign is not one of them.
