The Kherwadi police on Monday arrested a man who along with his aide, who is untraceable, allegedly cheated a woman of gold and cash worth Rs 2.50 lakh on the pretext of curing her daughter’s illness, officials have said.

The 38-year-old complainant is a homemaker who lives in Bandra (East) with her two daughters. She met the two accused Ayub Khan, 35, a resident of Buldhana, and Abdul Shaikh, 43, a driver from Bandra (East) through one of her friends. Her friend told her that Khan can treat her daughter, who has seizures.

She called Khan and requested him to check her daughter’s health. On February 12, Khan and his aide came to her house around 4 pm and told her that the gold she was wearing is “haram” or forbidden under Islamic law and because of that she has been falling sick. He then said the gold will have to be “cleansed” and asked her to hand it over to him.

Two days later, the woman met Khan and asked him about her gold ornaments. He told her that he had kept them in the bathroom of a mosque to clean them. On February 17, he visited her house again where he examined her daughter and said she would die in 48 hours.

The woman then asked Khan to help her daughter. He said she will have to be treated and Rs 1.50 lakh will be required for her treatment. The woman borrowed the money from a friend and paid Khan, who said he will have to order the medicine online.

On February 23, Ayub gave her a bottle of medicine. The woman took the medicine to an Ayurvedic shop to check it and was informed that it was for increasing appetite and it was worth Rs 100. The woman then realized that the men had been duping her and approached the local police.

“We have arrested Shaikh and are on the lookout for Ayub. Shaikh was produced before a magistrate court and remanded to police custody,” said a police officer from the Kherwadi police station.
