Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Cal., on Sunday criticized a recent re-election ad for Gov. Kay Ivey during an appearance on MSNBC’s ‘The Sunday Show with Jonathan Capehart.’
In the 30 second spot, Ivey says if President Joe Biden “keeps shipping illegal immigrants into our states we’re all going to have to learn Spanish. My message to Biden: No way, Jose.”
ln the ad, Ivey goes on to say she sent National Guard troops to the Mexican border and “banned sanctuary cities.”
“The left can try to cancel me,” Ivey said. “Here in Alabama, we’re going to enforce the law.”
Capehart called the ad “bonkers” and asked Waters if it was racist.
“This is plain racist ignorance in your face,” Waters replied.
She added that she preferred to ignore the spot and keep “up the fight against racism and discrimination….We don’t have time to deal with that kind of stupidity and that kind of ignorance.”
“It is absolutely shameful,” Waters said, “that in this day and age that we have people who think like that, who speak like that, and who have access to the resources to purchase the kind of ad to just literally spill that kind of mess across our screens.”
Ivey’s campaign did not immediately respond on Monday to a request for comment.
