Ex-NBA star defends Nick Kyrgios from ‘unfair’ criticism

Former Australian and NBA star Andrew Bogut has come to the defense of Nick Kyrgios, stating the 27-year-old absolutely loves basketball and criticizing him for the way he competed in a charity basketball game is simply unfair.

This past weekend in Sydney, Kyrgios participated in the Sydney Kings’ Starlight Celebrity Game. Kyrgios blocked NSW Premier Dominic Berrottet and attempted to block Miss Universe Australia 2020 Maria Thattil. Steve Carfino, who was infucted into the Australian National Basketball League Hall of Fame in 2004, called out Kyrgios after the game.

“What a jerk. Oh my goodness,” Carfino said on Fox Sports’ The Back Page. “And what a lack of sportsmanship. He’s blocking girls’ shots, he’s not passing to his teammates. “This is a celebrity game.

There’s be funds to be raised for the Starlight Foundation. It was ridiculous”.

Bogut defends Kyrgios from the Carfino criticism

“Have to say @NickKyrgios LOVES his Basketball. Him wanting to dominate and play well is not a bad thing that we should now make an issue.

I did an event with him last year, and he literally shot hoops by himself as we waited to the point he was dripping sweat. He loves basketball.”

In another tweet, Bogut added: “If I was to play in a Charity Tennis tournament, or for that fact a Poker Tournament (which I have played plenty).

I want to do well and try and win. Sorry not sorry.”

Kyrgios, who is known for his humanitarian work and is always ready to support a charity, couldn’t believe of what he was accused of him by Carfino.

“Lack of respect? You potato, have a look at my foundation and look me in my eyes and tell me what lack of respect there is for that?” Kyrgios commented under Fox Sports Australia’s Instagram post. “Maybe if you showed less sportsmanship your NBA career would of lasted longer (laugh emoji)”.
