BENGALURU: Baraguru Ramachandrappa, who chaired the previous committee overseeing textbook revisions, refuted allegations made by BC Nagesh, minister for primary and secondary education, on lapses from his team while drawing up content for school students, saying they were untrue. In a note, Ramachandrappa said Nagesh’s allegation that the committee he headed had dropped lessons on prominent personalities like Kuvempu, BR Ambedkar, Mahatma Gandhi, Rani Chennamma, Sangolli Rayanna and Kempegowda, was untrue. He said Kuvempu’s poems are in Kannada textbooks for classes 7 and 10, while the lesson on Ambedkar is in Part 1 of Social Science for class 8 and Part 2 book for class 10. He lessons said on the Constitution are in class 9 books, Gandhi in classes 7 and 10 Social Science books. Sangolli Rayanna is in Part 2 for class 6, Part 1 for class 10, and in class 5. The lesson on Kempegowda is in Part 1 of Social Science for class 7. Similarly, there are portions on the Wadiyars, the erstwhile rulers of Mysore . Ramachandrappa said the information “was factual” and the focus was on “providing information”. He said for school children, it was pointless to be debating and discussing personalities like Tipu. He said: “We formed 27 committees and consulted 172 experts to draw up content. More than 30 discussion sessions were held with teachers, DIET principals and other stakeholders and their feedback sought. If information was still lacking or if there were mistakes, they could have been changed.” Ramachandrappa said that it is not “fair practice” in Kannada culture to criticize a former team that had “worked hard”. He said Nagesh should focus on resolving current controversies, instead of engaging in arguments.
