BLAME DRIVERS

I am again getting so frustrated with the city. Now they figure by making Main Street two-way, the accidents will be reduced.

The real problem is the government insists on giving driver’s licenses to anyone that asks for them. Just look at the people out there who have no clue what they’re doing behind the wheel. It really is scary. And while I’m at it, do pickup trucks come from the factory with turn signals?

SIDEWALK BIKE LANES?

Recently, I read that one safety initiative proposed by the city is to widen sidewalks. Puzzled at first as to why this would help, two recent incidents explained it. Walking along King Street I was suddenly overtaken from behind by a cyclist on the sidewalk without warning of any kind. Luckily, I did not turn into my store so he was able to go around me. I assume the well marked, empty bike lane on the street was six feet too far away. A near miss.

A few days later, while walking on another section of King Street, I noticed a cyclist coming straight to me at high speed. However, the sidewalk was very wide so I was able to step aside and avoid being hit. Now I understand — the widened sidewalks will give cyclists (who seem to be unable to follow the Highway Traffic Act) more space on the sidewalks. Ingenious. Perhaps there will even be bike lanes on the sidewalks?

FACEBOOK’S RIGHTS

Does Facebook have a moral right to redirect users to an opposing view when it doesn’t agree with a user’s post?

Every time I come across a post that’s critical of Pfizer, government mandates, or COVID-19 vaccines, Facebook has added a link to a site with pro-vaccine information.

This happens routinely to posts supporting the truckers’ convoy as well as posts disputing our government’s handling of climate change. These attempts by Facebook to undermine the free exchange of information — whether or not posts are accurate — is an assault on our freedom of speech and amounts to a blatant misuse of Facebook’s corporate power.

While Facebook was created and promoted as a vehicle of free and unfettered communication, it has evolved into an Orwellian tool of free-speech repression to serve its administration’s political ideology.
