New footage from the upcoming Pokemon games Scarlet and Violet has sparked debate among fans about whether the graphics have improved over past games.

Pokémon fans are currently engaging in a heated debate over the graphics in the upcoming Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

The arguments began to surface in droves on Twitter after a new clip from Scarlet and Violet was released on YouTube showing footage of competitive Pokémon battles. Many of the tweets focus on scenes from a battle between Cloyster and Cyclizar, a new Dragon/Normal-type Pokémon, with fans criticizing the games as looking worse than Generation VIII’s Sword and Shield. Observations along these lines sparked further arguments about the fanbase’s critical attitude towards Sword and Shield’s graphical design, with accusations of hypocrisy levied at those who assert that those games look better than Scarlet and Violet do.

A post by @CentroLeaks roundly summarizes the attitudes of Pokémon fans that feel that Scarlet and Violet are graphically underperforming to Sword and Shield. In this post, @CentroLeaks posted a clip that draws the viewer’s attention to the “cloud” animations that appear when Pokémon transition to other forms during battle, commenting that “we’re back SWSH-era high quality animations huh.” This is a sarcastic reference to previous reassurances from the Pokémon development team that the animators were putting a lot of effort into creating new, high-quality animations for future installments.

Although fans are generally divided on their opinions about Scarlet and Violet’s overall graphical quality, the most anger seems to have been sparked not by those disagreements per se but by perceived hypocrisy from the Pokémon fandom about its feelings towards Sword and Shield. A Twitter post by @Mootmonthly asserted that Sword and Shield look better than Scarlet and Violet. The post prompted an outraged response from many Pokémon fans that the same community that had once slammed Sword and Shield for having terrible graphics was now praising them. The Twitter user @penbbles, for example, made a response post stating that “y’all are not going to turn around and pretend to like swsh after three annoying years of arguments and drama.”

Taking place in the expansive Paldea region, Scarlet and Violet are adding many innovations to the traditional Pokémon game formula, including offering players legendary Pokémon during the beginning of the game and allowing them to progress through three different storylines. While many of these changes have sparked excitement among the series’ fanbase, other additions, such as Terastal Pokémon and the new ridable legendaries, have been met with a more divisive response.

Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet will be available on Nintendo Switch starting Nov. 18.
