South Carolina cancels BYU series after racist incident

On Friday, the University of South Carolina women’s basketball team announced the cancellation of a home-and-home series with BYU.

The decision comes after an incident last month at a BYU volleyball game. Duke volleyball player Rachel Richardson and her teammates of color allege that BYU fans bombarded them with racial slurs and threats during a recent match.

Initially, South Carolina and BYU were to meet several times over the 2022-23 and 2023-2024 campaigns, including this season’s opener on November 7.

According to a statement released by the team, South Carolina is finalizing a replacement for their season opener.

“As head coach, my job is to do what’s best for my players and staff,” head coach Dawn Staley said in the team’s statement. “The incident at BYU has led me to reevaluate our home-and-home, and I don’t feel that this is the right time for us to engage in this series.”

South Carolina athletic director Ray Tanner threw his support behind Staley, leaving it up to the team to decide whether to cancel the series with BYU or not.

“Dawn and I have discussed her thoughts on the situation,” Tanner said. “I support Dawn and all of our coaches in their right to schedule games and opponents that are best for their teams.”
