The beach at Big Seven Lake in Seven Lakes State Park in Holly Township remains closed for swimming for the Labor Day weekend.
Officials at the park, 14390 Fish Lake Road, say an overpopulation of geese is responsible.
The Oakland County Health Division closed the beach in early August because of high levels of E.coli bacteria, apparently from goose droppings, according to a post on the parks Facebook page.
We clean the goose poop off the beach area most mornings, but they also poop on the shore in other areas. We don’t have the time or staff to clean around the entire lake, so when it rained it likely got washed in, the post said.
This being such a dry summer is bad also, because until a couple days ago the dam wasn’t flowing at all, so there’s been no water flow or circulation for about 2 months. Hunting would be helpful when the season opens to cut down on the population of geese, but unfortunately very few people hunt geese anymore so they are very overpopulated in this area.
Sunbathing, fishing, boating and picnicking are unaffected by the closure, the post said.
At least one other lake in the park is available for swimming but does not have a beach area.
