Letters Sept. 11: Racism not Edmonton’s worst crime problem

Lets be clear: There is a trend in the media, which reports crimes of hate related to race and/or religion. I acknowledge these crimes occur, however statistics also indicate they are incredibly rare. The trend from this media attention has found its way to city hall where the belief is that racism is everywhere 24/7. The mayor believes these rare and unpredictable hate crimes can disappear by waving his magic wand. On the other hand, if we consider this situation for what it is and recognize there are many crimes and incidents which go unreported, unnoticed in the media and unacknowledged by our politicians, well see that hate crimes represent only one aspect of what is taking place in society (and a rare one at that). The next time I hear someone from city hall yap about racism, I want them to come to my neighborhood (which was recently cleaned up by the city, and I thank them because they did a reasonably good job) and look at the litter, which is ongoing and pervasive. I want them to talk to people who have had incidents which havent seen media attention and hear their stories. I want them to get out of their bubble and realize there are more pressing issues than rare and unpredictable hate crimes. I think some of our politicians are easily fed and manipulated by some stories as reported in the media. They only focus on what is the current trend and that is not productive in the greater context.

(The problems seem to go far beyond racism.)

SCARE TACTIC

Re: Mark Patterson letter (New climate reality, Sept. 8). I dont think Mark Patterson realizes that this climate crisis is just a scare tactic. The 97 per cent of scientists agree has been debunked already. Even Patrick Moore says its all about money and power. Who is Patrick Moore? A Canadian ecologist who happened to co-found Greenpeace. Think for yourself dude.

RYAN WALKER

(Even those who agree something must be done cannot agree on what that something is.)

USE COMMON SENSE

For all those letter writers suggesting that environmentalists or supporters of the NDP or Green party should get zero money from the surplus, how narrow-minded could you be? Do you not understand that this money was made by shifting the burden of pollution onto others? As climate change gets worse, the taxpayers of all stripes will be the ones to fund the cleanup of the mess left behind by the oil industry. Your suggestions are like saying that I should keep all the profits from my business of dumping garbage on your lawn, and you should keep none of those profits because you opposed the dumping of garbage on your lawn. Not only do you ignore the pollution, you vilify the people who rightly point out its existence. Absurd. It is common sense that if you profit from creating pollution, then you should pay for the cost of cleaning up that pollution. It would be nice if we could live in an imaginary universe where fossil fuels provided free energy with no pollution, but thats not the reality we live in.

MORE JUSTIN

So, the Dear Leader Justin has announced that he will be gracing the country for another election. Apparently multiple ethics violations, criminal investigation from the RCMP and all the rest didnt even cross his mind when making this decision. Doesn’t seem to matter, the voters in Ontario will most likely hand this person another government. Wont matter if its a minority, Jagmeet will simply bend over to provide him with another majority government. I usually tell everyone that their choices matter, but in federal politics it doesn’t.

Article content LIBERAL FEAR

Nothing is more obvious than the Liberal Parties rising panic over the coming election of Smith and Poilievre as true political leaders against the tyranny of the Trudeau Liberals. The Liberals are using all of their corrupt media puppets and corrupt pollsters pushing the Liberal propaganda. Even the once decent Angus Reid polling has become a gross smear job of both candidates. It is inspiring to see these two individuals standing strong against such dishonest and malicious Liberal manipulation.

IAIN FOULDS

(Smith and Poilievre seem to appeal to a very loyal core of supporters.)

WRONG MOVE

Lets look at this a bit closer. The potential of selling LNG to Germany was not a strong enough business case to justify, according to Justin Trudeau. Billions and trillions of dollars were on the table, all Trudeau had to do is pick it up. But he thing not to. So it is safe and accurate to say the failed sale has a strong enough political case to walk away from. Trudeau has completely twisted the fact that he works for Canada, and Canadas best interests. Instead Trudeau thinks and believes Canada works for him. This is the sign and actions of a true dictator. Remember to vote this clown out next election. Trudeau is exactly what Canada does not need. Maybe he could go to China or Russia where dictators are needed and abundant. Trudeau was all for returning NG turbines but dead set against selling LNG. What the hell is wrong with him? He is the furthest thing from being a leader.
