Blaming Mayor Breed for SFs homelessness, crime and drug problem

[ad_1]

Crime, homelessness, corruption and traffic are not unique to this city. What we do have is an unusual city/county hybrid with a completely dysfunctional and bloated city government. Moving to supervisorial districts years ago only exacerbated the problem, with 11 little fiefdoms looking out for their own interests and not the citys as a whole.

With the mayor and Board of Supervisors, its not clear who, if anyone, is really in charge. Instead, squeaky wheels get their grease, and blame fingers keep being pointed.

If then-Mayor Willie Brown couldnt fix Muni in 100 days, as he famously promised, how can we expect todays leaders to be any better?

City can be great

Mexico City is cleaner and safer than San Francisco! My wife and I are traveling here on holiday. Ive lived in Paris, Barcelona and London. Why is it that the streets in these cites that are many times larger than San Francisco are so clean, absent of any litter, and with a decimal-point fraction of homelessness?

All these cities employ street cleaners. Its common to see uniformed street cleaners at all hours of the day sweeping sidewalks. Im not suggesting that this is the solution, but it seems like a common sense approach for making streets cleaner and safer while reducing homelessness by providing government jobs with health care.

Its disheartening to travel abroad and see what is possible when civic pride by government leaders is a priority. Its even more disheartening to see the terrible reputation San Francisco now has worldwide.

And, worse yet, we are losing tourism and convention business because of this reputation. San Francisco is viewed as one of the worst-run cities in the US Thats on Mayor London Breed. We need bold leadership with the conviction as a Democrat I hate to say it to make San Francisco great again.

Leno for mayor

Regarding the coming elections and the widespread dismay over the condition of the city in general, and our mayor and Board of Supervisors in particular, we voters have only ourselves to blame. We could have elected the uniquely qualified Mark Leno, a widely respected and incorruptible man with a long, distinguished record of public service and a deep understanding of policy, governance and effective leadership.

Instead, we thing London Breed.

Town not forgotten

Regarding Tracing remnants after erasure of Bay Area town (Bay Area & Business, Sept. 11): Thank you, Justin Phillips, for proving that a place I remembered, but could never find again, was not a hallucination.

In the early 1950s, my father was a state farm labor placement agent for southern Alameda and Contra Costa counties. Driving a carload of 15-year-old girls home to Berkeley from a Carmel vacation, he wanted to show us where farmworkers lived. Not here at a break in the plum orchards where a concrete wall guarded rows of identical stucco houses. This is what the whole valleys about to turn into. After we crossed the Dumbarton Bridge, Here.

Rows of houses again, but these were built like kids forts, out of plywood and tarpaper, shipping pallets and tarps. Not many windows, no lawns or gardens. Bumping along an unlit, unpaved street, This is called an unincorporated town, Russell City. He didnt have to say more.
