RuPaul’s Drag Race UK series 4 cast responds to RuPaul’s criticism over UK culture

We’re fast approaching the fourth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race in the UK.

But host RuPaul has received some online criticism for not understanding all the niche UK references made by the queens.

Responding to the comments, the season 4 cast defended Mama Ru and the effort she puts in behind the scenes.

“If RuPaul doesn’t get it, she makes an effort to get it,” Danny Beard said exclusively to Digital Spy.

“Sometimes when she doesn’t get it, the meaning she takes from it can be even funnier. By season 675 of Drag Race UK, because you know that’s coming, I think she’ll basically be British.

“Maybe by season 675, I’ll understand some of the accents that are happening too,” added Le Fil. “Sometimes it’s not even across the pond, it’s just across the North/South divide. Anything can get lost in translation.”

Manchester-based queen Cheddar Gorgeous added: “It’s RuPaul’s show. You’re going in to do RuPaul’s Drag Race.

“It is Drag Race UK, but it’s always through the lens of the Drag Race show and that’s what the fans want. I don’t think it’s fair to level criticism on a host in that way. It doesn’t feel accurate.”

The cast also praised judge Michelle Visage, who is a self-declared Anglophile.

“Michelle’s knowledge of the UK and anything to do with it is better than ours sometimes,” Just May said. “She’s sitting there in-between scenes explaining.”

“Entertainment can cross cultures,” said Pixie Polite. “You don’t need to completely understand a reference to understand something is funny or entertaining. We’re on season 4 now and Ru’s been over here for a couple of years, so I think he’s become an Anglophile.”

Others added that sometimes it was funnier if Ru didn’t know the reference straight away.

“It’s new to her ears to hear it so it can be even better, like a first laugh,” explained Sminty Drop.

“If she’s hearing ‘I’m a total slag’, that’s for the first time so she might have the upper hand because it makes us look even funnier.”

“There’s always that one thing each season that you really see Ru latch on to and he just runs with it and is fascinated by it,” said Dakota Schiffer.

“You don’t really get that from other hosts because we’re simultaneously entertaining him, and educating him at the same time.”

RuPaul’s Drag UK series 4 begins on September 22 on BBC Three and iPlayer and streams on WOW Presents Plus in the US.
