National Human Rights Commission chairman Nasima Begum on Thursday said that the government should investigate the allegations of human rights violations by law enforcement agencies.
Addressing a press conference at the CIRDAP auditorium on the occasion of her three years at the commission, she said that if the commission was empowered, and had capacity to launch investigation against law enforcement agencies, the situation could be improved.
The NHRC chair stated that when there was allegation against law enforcement agencies, the government usually said that the law enforcement apparatus did not pick anyone.
It is the responsibility of the state to find the missing persons when the family accused the law enforcement agencies, according to the commission chair.
Nasima Begum added that the victim families who filed complaint with the commission were so frustrated that they even did not receive phone and lost their interest.
The commission has so far received 119 complaints of enforced disappearance, and of them 28 people had returned while 33 others were arrested, she mentioned.
Other members and senior officials of the commission were present at the program.
