Doncaster sack McSheffrey with criticism over style of play

DONCASTER have today become the latest League Two side to sack their manager after Gary McSheffrey was dismissed.

McSheffrey and assistant Steve Ayre were both axed this morning with Rovers in 12th place after taking only one point from the last four games.

Saturdays 3-0 defeat at Carlisle proved the final straw in McSheffreys 10-month reign.

Chairman David Blunt said: While results so far in Sky Bet League Two have been largely positive, there has been a growing concern over the standard of performances in matches and a lack of progress between games.

We feel this is threatening our ability to achieve our stated goals for the season.

We have also been disappointed that our wishes for a particular style of play and overall identity, which were clearly laid out over the summer, have not been brought into effect in competitive matches.

These factors have combined to lead us to take this difficult decision to relieve Gary and Steve of their posts.

Doncaster’s time-wasting tactics were widely criticized after the goalless draw with City at Valley Parade on the opening day of the season.

McSheffrey becomes the fourth manager after Newports James Rowberry, Paul Hartley at Hartlepool and Hulls Shota Arveladze to have lost their job since facing City this season.

City will also be up against a new face in the visiting dug-out when Crawley arrives at Valley Parade later this month after they recently sacked Kevin Betsy.
