Whoopi Goldberg is defending Blazing Saddles from criticism that it’s a racist film.
Backlash over the film was brought to the “Hot Topics” table after Mindy Kaling said The Office couldn’t be made today because the characters are too “inappropriate”.
The 1974 satirical western comedy Mel Brooks stars Cleavon Little and Gene Wilder and is about a politician who hires a black sheriff to oversee a troubled town. The View moderator pushed back against claims that the film was racist.
“He deals with racism by tackling it straight, straight, ahead, making you think and laugh about it,” she said. “It’s not just racism, it’s all isms, it hits all isms.”
Goldberg continued, “Blazing Saddles, because it’s a great comedy, would still go today. There’s a lot of comedies that aren’t good, okay? We’re just gonna say that. It is not. Blazing Saddles is one of the greatest because it affects everyone.
The Oscar-winning actress advised her co-host Sunny Hostin to do herself a favor and watch the movie like she’s never seen it before.
Later in the debate, Goldberg added, “Leave my blazing saddles alone, don’t make me come for you.”
Sarah Haines pleaded for “a sacred space for comedians” because “laughter is literally the ultimate cure for life and all it brings, the inevitable suffering”.
Haines continued, “If we can’t leave the comedians alone, if they stop pushing the envelope, they’re going to step in and they’re going to break through it. And it’s fine to have those conversations when that happens, but that’s one area where you have to leave it alone because they’re equal opportunity violators and we’re all going to be the recipients.
