Kabul [Afghanistan], Dec 9 (ANI): Following criticism of a man’s public execution, the Taliban on Thursday defended their actions. The Taliban on Thursday called international criticism of his public execution “reprehensible” and “interfering” in Afghanistan’s internal affairs, Voice of America (VOA) News reported. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said in a statement that their action had been criticized due to a lack of information about Islam and Afghanistan. He pointed out that 99% of the Afghan population is Muslim. Mujahid’s statement comes after the United States and the United Nations criticized the Taliban for the public execution of a man. Zabihullah Mujahid said they had made many sacrifices to enforce Islamic laws in Afghanistan. Defending public execution, Zabihullah Mujahid said death sentences are “given all over the world”, including America and Europe, according to the VOA News report. “The fact that Afghanistan is criticized for applying Islamic punishments shows that some countries and organizations have insufficient knowledge or have problems with Islam, respecting the beliefs and laws of Muslims,” said VOA News quoting Zabihullah Mujahid. “This action is interference in the internal affairs of countries and is reprehensible,” he added.
On Thursday, the Taliban Supreme Court announced the public flogging of 27 convicts, including nine women, in Parwan province. The Taliban’s Supreme Court decision comes a day after the public execution of a man accused of murder for the first time since they took control of Afghanistan last year. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed the public execution of a man. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the execution took place at a sports stadium in the western province of Farah on Wednesday, according to the VOA News report. He said hundreds of people witnessed the execution, including senior members of the group, according to the VOA News report. Zabihullah Mujahid said the executed person was tried by Taliban courts and subsequent appellate courts. He claimed the person executed in court had “confessed to stabbing to death” a Farah resident and stealing his belongings, including a motorbike. According to the spokesman, the execution was carried out by the victim’s father. The spokesman for the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Jeremy Laurence, said in a statement: “The death penalty is incompatible with fundamental principles of human rights, and its application cannot be reconciled with full respect for the right to life. Lawrence called on the Taliban to create an immediate moratorium on any further executions and to act quickly to ban the use of the death penalty. The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) echoed the message on social media. He tweeted: “The de facto authorities of Afghanistan today announced the public execution of a man in Farah province. The UN strongly opposes the death penalty in all circumstances and calls on the de facto authorities to establish an immediate moratorium with a view to abolishing the death penalty. “Meanwhile, the United States also criticized the Taliban after reports of public executions emerged. US State Department spokesman Ned Price said, “We have seen the reports that which the Taliban ordered judges to impose their interpretation of Sharia. This includes public executions; this includes amputations; this includes floggings. Price said: “We have seen despicable videos that have been circulating online lately days regarding some of these tactics. This tells us that the Taliban are seeking to return to their regressive and abusive practices of the 1990s. This was an affront to the dignity and human rights of all Afghans at the time; it would be an affront to the dignity and human rights of all Afghans today. » (ANI)
