‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ co-director Daniel Kwan tells fans of his smash hit A24 not to get toxic on social media when it comes to film critics snubbing the film on their lists of ” best movies of 2022″. Some “Everything Everywhere” admirers have taken to Twitter to slam New York Times film critics Manohla Dargis and AO Scott for excluding the film from their top 10 lists. Movies that made the cut included Jordan Peele’s “Nope” and foreign movies like “EO.” A fan called Scott “pretentious” and an “upper middle class fanatic” for snubbing “Everything Everywhere”.
“I know the end of the year twitter movie speech can be toxic [as fuck] with all the ‘Best of’ lists coming out, but this really needs to stop,” Kwan wrote on Twitter to outraged fans. “Classifying any work of art is so absurd and should only be considered an incredibly personal and subjective endeavor.”
Kwan continued, “It’s been an amazing year for movies and there’s so much to celebrate, why waste your time in anger?…These year-end lists are a great opportunity for people to check out movies whose they haven’t heard of (our film doesn’t need that), to help small films make money (no need for that), and to celebrate the hard work of the filmmakers we admire (n need to celebrate anymore).
“The next time you see something in our film that makes you angry, take a step back, remember why you fell in love with our film,” the director added. “Those feelings are infinitely more important to you than any list from a critic who has a completely different lived experience than yours.”
Kwan concluded by encouraging all of his followers to send the following message to any fan who might be outraged that “Everything Everywhere” didn’t make the top 10: “Hi, I’m Dan Kwan, one of the directors of EEAAO I appreciate your love of the movie, but maybe next time you can try to tone down the aggression. This place is full of shitty talk, don’t overdo it (what would Waymond do?) Don’t you feel not bad, it’s hard to keep your cool here.”
“Everything Everywhere All at Once” was co-directed by Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. The duo, collectively known as the Daniels, previously worked together on the Sundance hit “Swiss Army Man.” Michelle Yeoh stars in “Everything Everywhere” as an overloaded laundromat owner who becomes a multiverse hero. The film earned over $100 million at the worldwide box office. Yeoh just won Best Actress honors from the National Board of Review.
