All everywhere, all at once Director arrests fans attacking critics

Dan Kwan, one of two directors known collectively as The Daniels, wants fans to know that the team behind Everything, Everywhere, Everything At Once already feels the love, and that it’s not necessary to fight on the Internet for the film. With year-end lists starting to be a thing, it’s inevitable that the movie will make its way into many critics’ “best movies of 2022” stories. And while it’s rare for crowd-lovers to be critical darlings as well, Everything Everywhere did just that. Unfortunately for everyone involved – and as we’ve seen with movies like Black Panther and Spider-Man: No Way Home – this can encourage rude behavior from fans.

Suddenly, a film that appeals to the general public should appear on the year-end lists. This means that if not, those fans may be disappointed and take to social media to harass the list editors. Kwan wants to close this now. Along with a screenshot of some of the most aggressive messages from fans of the movie, here’s what he had to say in a social media post:

“The algorithm pushed this on my timeline, and as one of the people who made the movie, this assault won’t hold up, man. I know the end of the year twitter movie talk can be toxic with all the “Best of” lists coming out, but this really needs to stop. Ranking any piece of art is so absurd and should only be seen as an incredibly personal and subjective endeavor. It was a amazing year for movies and there’s so much to celebrate, why waste your time in anger? (that’s a rhetorical question, I know algorithms have trained us to chase those emotions, capitalism has taught us to everything see it as a zero-sum game blah blah blah).

“These year-end lists are a great opportunity for people to discover movies they haven’t heard of (our movie doesn’t need them), help small movies make money (don’t need it) and to celebrate the hard work of filmmakers we admire (no need to celebrate anymore).A healthy industry requires a diverse range of films finding their own versions of success.Each list that deviates from the norm should be celebrated (unless they’re shilling problematic shit hah) I’m so grateful to the fans who love this movie and made it theirs I know to many this story and these characters mean a lot , so being light on the movie feels like a personal attack, but going after everyone does a disservice (and goes against the movie’s message).

“The next time you see something in our film that makes you angry, take a step back, remember why you fell in love with our film. Those feelings are infinitely more important to you than any list of a critic who has a completely different life experience from you. Our work has always been polarizing (see: Swiss Army Man Speech), and it’s wonderful. Even being part of the conversation is an honor. To have created something that has touched so many passionate people is enough (seriously please no more validation, I’m drowning).

“(All of the above applies to the rest of the Oscar season, especially after the nominations/winners are announced. Seriously fam, I want to see absolutely no bullies, villains, assholes acting on behalf of our movie post -Oscar announcements.)
