TOBA TEK SINGH: Dozens of relatives of two slain men staged a protest at Faisalabads Chowk District Council on Friday over alleged police negligence that led to the escape of the suspect, who was in custody on Thursday.
Demonstrators gathered at the busy intersection and blocked various roads that converge there to traffic and chanted slogans against the police. They carried signs calling for the immediate arrest of the suspect.
They told reporters that eight months ago the suspect, Zulfiqar Ali, shot and killed two friends – Sabir and Altaf – for speaking out on social media against him selling narcotics.
They alleged that the suspect had been admitted to the Faisalabad Heart Institute (FIC) for the past 20 days, in connivance with the police, was allowed to move around without handcuffs and eventually managed to escape.
They expressed concern that after his escape the lives of the victims’ relatives would be in danger, but police did not reveal that he had fled even after 24 hours had passed. They said they learned of his escape from the newspapers, demanding his immediate re-arrest for their protection.
Meanwhile, Faisalabad City Police Officer (CPO) Syed Khalid Mahmood Hamdani claimed that Civil Lines Police arrested the three officers who were on duty at the hospital and sent them behind bars after registering a case against them.
He said police teams were carrying out raids to arrest the fleeing suspect under the supervision of an SP, hoping he would be arrested soon.
Mr. Hamdani also assured the relatives of the victims of their protection.
