‘She-Hulk’ Cast Defends Marvel VFX Artists Amid CGI Critics

The ‘She-Hulk: Attorney at Law’ team defends criticism over visual effects work on the Tatiana Maslany-led show, amid a recent flurry of VFX artists speaking out against alleged poor working conditions for projects produced by Marvel Studios.

“I feel incredibly, like, respectful of the talent of these artists and how quickly they have to work, obviously, like a lot faster than they probably should be given, in terms of producing these things,” said Maslany to reporters during a virtual panel for the upcoming Disney+ series during the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour on Wednesday.

Jessica Gao, who is the series’ head writer, added, “It’s terrible that a lot of artists feel rushed and feel like the workload is too heavy. I mean, I think everyone on this panel stands in solidarity with all workers and is very supportive of good working conditions.

“She-Hulk” director Kat Coiro noted that while she worked with VFX artists on the series, “we’re not behind the scenes of these long nights and days.”

“If they feel pressure, we are on their side and we listen to them,” added Coiro.

Maslany, Gao, and Coiro had been asked by a reporter about their experiences with “She-Hulk” VFX artists and “what do you think of the finished product,” noting that “there have been many accounts recently that VFX houses …they feel incredibly crushed by studios in general and Marvel keeps getting called out.

Criticism regarding Marvel Studios specifically has been bubbling across the internet for the past few months, starting with anonymous Reddit posts alleging damning last-minute changes and poor overtime pay. One artist, Dhruv Govil, posted on Twitter in July that working on Marvel shows “is what made me quit the visual effects industry”, alleging that Marvel is “a horrible client” and has seen colleagues “collapse from being overworked, while Marvel tightens the purse strings.

“She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” has come under even greater scrutiny due to its inherent premise, which Jennifer Walters (Maslany) – a lawyer specializing in superhuman-focused legal cases – must navigate in the complicated life of a bachelor in his thirties. who also happens to be a 6ft 7in green super powerful hulk.

Turning Maslany into She-Hulk requires a complex level of CGI work that most TV shows don’t have the time or budget to handle for long, and the show’s first trailer was criticized for what some considered unconvincing CGI work.

During the TCA panel, Maslany defended the show’s visual effects. “I think we have to be very aware of the fact that working conditions aren’t always optimal and they’ve made such incredible strides in this industry,” the actor said. “I watch it and it doesn’t look like a cutscene from a video game. I can see the character’s thoughts. I’m very impressed with what they’re doing.

Coiro also criticized She-Hulk’s appearance on the show. “I think it has to do with our culture’s belief in their ownership of women’s bodies,” she said. “We talk a lot about his morphology. We based it a lot on Olympian athletes, not bodybuilders, but I think if we had gone the other way we would have faced the same criticism. I think it’s very hard to win when you’re making women’s bodies.

The nine-episode comedy series was pushed back Wednesday from its original Aug. 17 debut to Aug. 18. It stars Mark Ruffalo as Jessica’s cousin Bruce Banner (and also the Hulk), Tim Roth as Emil Blonsky (and also the Abomination), and Benedict Wong as Wong, as well as Jameela Jamil, Josh Segarra, Ginger Gonzaga, Jon Bass and Renee Elise Goldsberry.
