Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn responds to the latest race-swapping controversy. Marvel Studios has steadily improved when it comes to cast diversity. A decade ago, we never had this diverse representation of cultures and ethnicities in movies and TV shows. Now we have actors and actresses from different countries as well as gender roles.

It seems race swapping is still an issue as far as audiences are concerned. Casting a black actor for an originally white character is a surefire way to infuriate some people on social media. This is not a new controversy, but a persistence. The latest to receive the backlash is Guardians of the Galaxys High Evolutionary.

Chukwudi Iwuji has been tapped to play the role of the High Evolutionary in the third installment of the Guardians franchise. The character is originally white in the comics, and many fans started asking Gunn about his choice of actor.

Gunn wasted no time and explained that he cast Iwuji because he was simply the best actor for the role. Because Chuck is the best actor I’ve ever worked with, that’s why. Has nothing to do with race, its quick response.

High Evolutionary originally appeared as a British scientist named Herbert Edgar Wyndham in Marvel Comics. The casting of Iwujis caused an uproar on social media, with some even asking why Mark Hamill wasn’t cast in the role instead of swapping out another character. Despite Gunn’s response, some fans were still unhappy and insisted on choosing the right person, and by that they meant one who looked exactly like the character portrayed in the source material.

This isn’t the first time Marvel Studios has swapped race, gender, and sexual orientation. The company is committed to bringing diversity to its platform. For years, fans have grown accustomed to seeing straight white men and women on screens. Now we have the likes of Ms. Marvel, Shang-Chi, and Black Panther.

Let’s also not forget that Marvel cast Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One in Doctor Strange. The original character is an old Asian man, and the exchange of race and gender has once again become the talk of the town.

Marvel Studios Continues to Embrace Diversity in Film and TV Chukwudi Iwuji

MCU continues to expand its horizons, and many new characters will be introduced in the years to come. This may upset many fans, but the studio believes in talent more than anything. Any actor or actress who can deliver an exemplary performance, despite their race or orientation, should get the big break they deserve.

Chukwudi Iwuji’s casting clearly has nothing to do with race. James Gunn saw his potential and, as the director firmly said, the greatest actor and the greatest guy around. No one but me has ever made a casting choice for any of my films.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will hit theaters on May 5, 2023.
