New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s new climate change documentary debuted in theaters over the weekend, grossing an abysmal $80 per theater.
The new film, “To the End”, was shot over four years and follows four young women, Cortez, activist Varshini Prakash, climate policy writer Rhiana Gunn-Wright and political strategist Alexandra Rojas, as they ‘they’re trying to push sweeping climate change legislation through Congress.
The film currently enjoys an 88% “fresh” critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and does not yet have a viewership score.

“Rep. Ocasio-Cortez offers the best on-screen antidote to despair that she’s funny, shrewd political strategy,” wrote Teo Bugbee of The New York Times.
“To the End is about to inspire more Americans to take action,” RogertEbert.com’s Nick Allen wrote in his review.
The documentary debuted on more than 120 screens over the weekend, but grossed less than $10,000 at all theaters, ranking 33rd at the box office.
Several Oscar-baiting films hailed at film festivals have struggled to excel in theaters this year, with critics blaming dwindling viewership on the rise of streaming platforms, with audiences growing distrust of the regard to critical scores and topics that do not interest a large part of the public.
The latter factor has perhaps been the biggest contributor to film’s meager earnings, with climate change documentaries in recent years failing to attract substantial audiences.

Earlier this year, “The Territory,” a National Geographic film about indigenous peoples struggling with the effects of climate change, grossed less than $70,000 throughout its theatrical run.
‘To the End’ creators Rachel Lears and Robin Blotnick previously directed ‘Knock Down the House,’ which revolved around the 2018 congressional primary campaigns of Cortez, Amy Vilela, Cori Bush, Paula Jean Swearengin and four others. progressive democrats.
While the documentary “Knock Down the House” garnered praise from film critics, certified with a 99% on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences had a very different opinion of the project, with a score sitting at 11%.
One audience member called the film “an overturned rehearsal party”, while others slammed the film for its “extremely polarizing message”.

“I feel like I watched a completely different film from those [the critics] watched,” one viewer said. “It was absolutely terrible, and it made me hate Alexandria Cortez after it was all over. I now see the public score and I would say it is much more accurate compared to the critics.”
In 2020, a seven-minute film about The Green New Deal, narrated by Ocasio-Cortez and illustrated by Molly Crabapple, was nominated for an Emmy.
