Chop Goblins releases retro FPS three weeks early, blame it on the cat

Games are delayed so often that it’s always a pleasure when a release date is moved earlier. Perhaps Chop Goblins takes it to the extreme. The 30-minute retro shooter from developer Dusk was supposed to be released on January 2, but it’s out now after being released several weeks earlier. “I was bored,” the developer explained on Twitter.

I was bored so Chop Goblins is NOW AVAILABLE!

In fairness, Szymanski offered a better explanation in a later tweet in which he blamed his cat.

The protagonist of Chop Goblins makes his own bed when he breaks into his local museum and frees the goblins trapped in a chest in the basement. Sleeping in it means following these goblins through time, from modern times to 1800s Transylvania, ancient Greece and the near future, and blowing them away. If you’ve played Dusk, you know Szymanski has a knack for creating weapons that rival the Quake and Blood era for how messy and powerful they feel.

It is also designed to be completed in just 30 minutes. “All killer and no filler,” the Steam page says, and there are five levels, five weapons, secrets to find, and an “assortment of different enemies and minibosses.”

A short game is a godsend in my book, and I’m glad to see it listed as an unabashed positive here. This is also reflected in the price, which is £3.59 at the time of writing, but $5 / £4 at the end of the launch discount, on Steam.
