ESPN football analyst Robert Griffin III used a racial slur in his defense of Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts during the Monday Night Countdown. (Watch the video below.)
Griffin, a former Heisman Trophy winner who played quarterback for seven NFL seasons, had a message for critics of Hurts, who led the Eagles to a 12-1 record.
People said Jalen Hurts couldn’t do it, he couldn’t get out of the pocket, he wasn’t the quarterback of the future, Griffin said. I think he proved all those jigabos wrong.
The pejorative term for black people has been around for ages, and the occasional inclusion of Griffins on Monday Night Football’s pre-game show came as a shock.
Griffin later tweeted that he meant those Bug-A-Boos.
Whatever my intention, I understand the historical context of the term that came out of my mouth and I apologize for it, he wrote.
We are not commenting beyond his tweet, ESPN told HuffPost on Tuesday.
Griffin has been in hot water before for comments gone wrong. Earlier this season, he compared an allegation of indecent exposure against former wide receiver Antonio Brown to the defenses of Detroit and Seattle.
AB showed more D’s than the Lions and Seahawks today, he wrote at the time.
