GREENVILLE, South Carolina (FOX Carolina) — An assisted living center in Greenville said two employees were terminated after an internal investigation into allegations of resident abuse.
Officials at the Oaks at Chanticleer on Berkmans Lane said they received disturbing and serious allegations about an employee on December 6. The information was presented by another employee who did not immediately report the incident.
Both employees were terminated under company policy.
According to a complaint filed with the Department of Health and Environmental Control, there were 8 alleged victims of physical abuse. DHEC investigates to determine if violations have occurred.
An Oaks spokesperson at Chanticleer said state and local authorities are conducting a separate investigation. The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that an active investigation was underway into one of the employees.
Below is a statement from Brittany Kinard, Executive Director of Oaks at Chanticleer:
After becoming aware of this situation, we launched an internal investigation, which led to rapid terminations, and we informed the national and local authorities who are carrying out their own investigation. We offer them our full cooperation and support any accusations, if any, they find. Residents suspected of having been victims of these unacceptable actions have undergone thorough physical and/or medical examinations, and their families have been notified. Their names will not be revealed.
It is a terrible and difficult situation. We have no tolerance for resident brutality and we sincerely apologize to our residents and their families. No one who entrusts loved ones to the care of others should have any concerns about their well-being, or even worse, possible mistreatment. We strive to screen and monitor our hires to ensure the safety and health of our residents and employees through a rigorous and thorough process. The actions of a former employee do not reflect our commitment to care, the dedication of our staff and the respect we have for our residents and their families. We were devastated to learn that there may be a suspicion of mistreatment and we will continue to cooperate with the authorities and have no further comment.
