Vandals hit the crèche in St Nicholas Kirkyard in Aberdeen.

Racist slurs were scrawled across the glass front of the stage, which features the baby Jesus alongside life-size Mary and Joseph.

It has now been temporarily closed by Aberdeen City Council.

Vandals are thought to have struck sometime between Sunday and Monday.

A spokeswoman for Aberdeen Council said: ‘We are extremely disappointed that the crèche representing seasonal goodwill has been vandalized.

“The nature of the damage is particularly heinous and has been reported to the police. The council is working to reopen the scene as soon as possible.

The crèche is scheduled until January 5th.

Vandals marked the graffiti on the glass covering the nativity scene. ‘Deeply alarming’

A blessing service was held at the Kirkyard last month as part of the town’s Christmas program.

Education Committee leader Martin Greig closed the ceremony which was also attended by schoolchildren from Aberdeen.

Mr Greig called the vandalism “shocking and offensive”.

He added: “The damage and misbehavior is deeply alarming. Racism goes against everything our city stands for.

“I have asked the council to remove the graffiti as a matter of urgency. I hope the police can help identify the perpetrators.

Police confirmed the vandalism was reported to them on Wednesday morning.

A police spokeswoman said: ‘On Wednesday December 14, police received a report of graffiti at the nativity of St Nicholas’ Church, Aberdeen.

“The vandalism took place between Sunday December 11 and Monday December 12. Police inquiries are continuing and anyone with information should contact 101 with reference number 0982 of December 14.”

Today the Nativity scene at St Nicholas Kirkyard opened where a blessing service took place, attended by Councilor Martin Greig and local school children. The nursery will remain open until January 5.

The vandals strike again

This incident does not mark the first time that St Nicholas Kirk’s annual nativity scene has been hit by vandals.

In 2019, baby Jesus was broken in half and his face was stolen.

The two sages and the donkey were also damaged just a day after the blessing ceremony.

At the time, local elected officials and residents expressed their disgust at the “appalling” attack.
