Christian influencer Brittany Dawn Nelson is under intense scrutiny after announcing she was adopting a child and monetizing aspects of caring for her adoptive child.
Nelson is no stranger to controversy. Earlier this year, the state of Texas sued its fitness consultancy, accusing it of falsely claiming to have expertise in helping people with eating disorders. The lawsuit also said customers complained that his fitness company promised customers personalized diet and fitness plans, but they were never delivered.
Now Nelson is defending himself against critics questioning his decision to become an adoptive parent.
The Texas-based influencer has been open about her fertility issues, sharing that she suffered a chemical miscarriage in April. In July she announced her desire to become a foster parent and in October Nelson suffered another miscarriage.
On Monday, she announced to her 469,000 Instagram followers that she and her husband were adopting a child, which upset some.
Nelson responded to criticism that her foster agency failed to do their due diligence given her and her husband’s controversial past. (Her husband, a former Kansas City, Missouri, police officer, was sued by the ACLU for using excessive force against a black man in 2013.)
“My background check is perfect, thank you,” Nelson said in a comment on Instagram. “I would be careful to believe anything you see about someone on the internet, gossip forum and especially manipulative reporting.”
Commenters on a Reddit forum dedicated to criticizing Nelson also questioned the ethics surrounding some of Nelson’s posts about the child. The r/BrittanyDawnSnark forum currently has 26,500 members.
Other forum members slammed Nelson for sharing what appears to be an affiliate link to his new baby monitor in a recent Instagram story, and for revealing personal details about the baby, including that he suffers from substance withdrawal.
Ahead of the child’s arrival, Nelson excitedly posted photos of her new stroller and car seat, as well as snaps from her foster baby shower. On Monday, she shared a family photo with the child’s face blurred out. (Although rules vary by state and foster agency, the U.S. Children’s Bureau rules that foster parents “do not identify a child or youth as a foster child and do not post their full name or address on any social media network.”)
It wouldn’t be the first time an influencer mom has come under fire for her parenting decisions. In 2020, vlogger Myka Stauffer apologized for reinstating her adopted son Huxley about whom she frequently posted on her social media, including sponsored posts.
Insider reached out to Nelson for comment.
