Former Chelsea defender William Gallas believes co-owner Todd Boehly would be to blame if the club failed to finish in the Premier League top four.

In the first season of the post-Roman Abramovich era, Chelsea sit eighth and eight points out of the Champions League places.

This is despite record summer spending at Stamford Bridge, with the Blues Boehly-Clearlake Capital property set to invest again in January.

Graham Potter was installed as the club’s new manager following the decision to sack Thomas Tuchel in September and the former Brighton boss has overhauled the coaching staff.

There have been other key appointments behind the scenes of a total overhaul, with the owners setting up a transfer think tank to oversee player recruitment.

Still, it’s been a tough campaign so far despite a strong star under Potter and Chelsea ended the first half of the season with three straight League defeats.

Gallas, however, thinks Boehly should be blamed if they don’t make the top four.

The former defender told Genting Casino: If Chelsea didn’t finish in the top four, Todd Boehly would have failed. There is no excuse for a club like Chelsea finishing outside the top four.

We are always very quick to judge players on their performance and so should the owner. He came in and spent a lot of money, but if he didn’t make the top four he would have failed.”
