I don’t think he deserved Jared Cannonier to defend Israel Adesanya after UFC 276 criticism

Former UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya received a ton of criticism after his fight against Jared Cannonier at UFC 276 last July. Adesanya beat Cannonier, but his performance was deemed boring, pitter-patter and a workout in the gym, all of which contrasted with what he said he would deliver in his fifth defense.

Although most criticized Adesanya, some, including Cannonier, defended him. For the Killa Gorilla, the performance was what he expected from the Last Stylebender, who is one of the best in the division.

Everyone’s on to him and I don’t think he deserved it,” Cannonier said during UFC Vegas 66 media day. “He did exactly what I expected of him, avoided the danger I brings and try to put his game down as best he can. . And I did the exact same thing that I always do, avoiding the danger they bring and putting out the dangers they have and trying to do damage to them.

And that’s what you get, continued Cannonier. When you get two of the best, things like this happen. It won’t be two people going head-to-head for five five-minute rounds. It’s not the best. The best are not affected. Best shots and not getting hit and I think we did. People saw it, and ignorance arose. Most people don’t know what they are looking at. They just want to see carnage, visceral, mayhem, mayhem. This is what they thrive on.

Months away from his first UFC championship opportunity, Cannonier hopes to secure a second with a victory over Sean Strickland, his next opponent at UFC Vegas 66 on Saturday. With Alex Pereira dethroning Adesanya at UFC 281 last November, a few contenders could challenge Po Atan if he remains at the top of the division.

If he does, then Cannonier sees himself as one of the next in line for Pereira or whoever the UFC middleweight champion is in the months ahead.

Me, Robert Whittaker is up there, said Cannonier. I’m sure the rematch between Israel and Alex is also up there. So here is. I’m right there. So [a] well, old fashioned saturday night should put my name in the mix.

Cannonier vs. Strickland drops Saturday, Dec. 17 at UFC APEX in Las Vegas.
