One of the nation’s largest youth soccer organizations launched an investigation into allegations of racial abuse committed earlier this month at a tournament in Florida.
Pop Warner said he is aware of reports that a man affiliated with the Highland Ranch Mountain Lions used a racial slur targeting the Hamden Hurricanes coaching staff during a Division II 12U quarter-final game, according to a press release released on Friday.

“A video has come to our attention showing adults, allegedly associated with a Pop Warner team, using racist and threatening language towards the coaches of another team,” the statement read. “The disturbing behavior shown in the video is inconsistent with our code of conduct and the expectations we have of our adult volunteers.”
In light of the alleged incident, the league will hold an “investigative hearing” in the coming days which may require “disciplinary action”, the league said.
“If the panel finds that any of the adults who engage in the verbal abuse are, in fact, associated with a Pop Warner crew, they will be subject to disciplinary action, including suspension from Pop Warner,” the statement continued.
The incident under review happened after the game between the two teams at a local hotel where the two teams were staying, according to a report.
In a video of the incident, at least one man can be heard shouting racial slurs.
“One thing is clear: the conduct and hateful language exhibited in this video is unacceptable. Our organization is committed to creating a safe, inclusive and positive environment for all young people and their families,” Pop Warner said.
