Racist thug Grant Harding beat a Polish homeless man to death as he slept in his sleeping bag
A racist thug has been jailed for at least 27 years after brutally beating a Polish homeless man to death in his sleeping bag.
Grant Harding, 30, punched, kicked and kicked Robert Jadecki, 44, in a violent and unprovoked attack in Northampton in the early hours of June 16 last year.
The court heard how Harding went to the pub after finishing work earlier in the day and texted a friend saying he was going to get out of his head, punch someone and probably end up in jail.
Hours later, a very drunk Harding met Mr Jadecki in a sleeping bag outside the local co-op and offered to buy him a drink.
But upon hearing Mr Jadeckis’ Polish accent, Harding suddenly became violent and aggressive, hurling a torrent of racial slurs at the helpless victim before kicking, punching and stamping him at dead.
Witnesses said Harding could be heard repeatedly telling Mr Jadecki he was going to kill him before being chased and detained by a brave bystander, the Northampton Chronicle reports.
Addressing the court, prosecutor Karim Khalil said Harding knew what he was likely to do that night by taking alcohol and drugs, but continued to do so nonetheless.
Harding was sentenced to 27 years in prison at Northampton Crown Court for the despicable murder
Harding was found guilty of murder following a trial at Northampton Crown Court and was jailed today for life, for a minimum of 27 years.
In her sentencing remarks, Judge Adrienne Lucking said the sentence reflected that the attack was racially motivated because Robert was Polish.
Detective Sergeant Robert Gray, of the East Midlands Special Operations Unit Major Crimes Team, said afterwards: Robert Jadecki was a mild-mannered man who was well regarded in the local community as well as by the Hope Center.
He was assaulted by Grant Harding in a vicious, unprovoked attack, so I’m really glad Harding got that long jail term.
Being homeless doesn’t make Robert’s death any less significant than anyone else’s, and again, we really want to make that point.
Hester Street was Roberts’ home, and he was savagely beaten to death in his sleeping bag.
He didn’t deserve to die, and I’m glad we were able to give him the justice he deserves.
The Hope Center in Northampton is a day center for the homeless, vulnerable and disadvantaged where Robert often attended.
A spokesperson for the center said after his death: His tragic and senseless death shocked us all deeply, not least in the way it happened, but especially because everyone who knew Robert felt warmth towards him.
He had an endearing and adorable side that almost everyone responded to.
His death once again shines a light on the horrific risks faced by people on the streets and I am glad that by working with other agencies we have seen almost all homeless people come off the streets.
Robert was part of a group of people who are the most excluded from our society, the most oppressed and the most abused.
Ordinary people like Robert are victims of prejudice, hatred, contempt and abuse.
Society needs to be more caring to help people like Robert and protect them from the violence and fury they face.
