Representative Chip Roy, a Republican from Texas, spoke with Fox News host Shannon Bream on Fox News Sunday to discuss securing the US-Mexico border and the work the Biden administration has been doing so far. now.

Bream confronted Roy, urging him to criticize Democrats — saying Republicans might actually be the problem by reiterating that the southern border is open, drawing more people to come.

“Biden campaigned on this. There were people showing up at our border wearing Biden t-shirts,” the GOP lawmaker said. “There is nothing hidden in the world about what this administration is doing and what Democrats on Capitol Hill are doing to say our borders are wide open.”

Roy continued: “When you put up a big neon sign saying if you come here and ask for asylum or heck, even now you don’t even have to ask for asylum. At Eagle Pass, d ‘where Bill Melugin had just reported, there’s a four-acre facility processing people, they don’t even need to seek asylum or be processed out of credible fear.”

Immigrants from Cuba and Venezuela warm themselves near a fire along the US-Mexico border fence while waiting to be processed by US Border Patrol after crossing into Mexico May 22 in Yuma, Arizona. Rep. Chip Roy, a Republican from Texas, sat down with Fox News host Shannon Bream on Sunday to discuss securing the border and the work the Biden administration has done so far.

Todd Bensman, senior national security fellow at the Center for Immigration Studies, told Newsweek on Sunday, “Democratic candidates in 2019 were going on national television to do debates. They were raising their hands and saying that they would provide health care to migrants as soon as they crossed the border.”

Bensman added: “All the candidates had anti-deportation platforms. That’s when I noticed an increase in the number of migrants crossing the border. They were saying we were waiting for a Democrat to come in. in office. And the Democrats kept their campaign promise.”

Meanwhile, Title 42 of the COVID-era immigration policy is set to expire on Wednesday, with border states saying they are bracing for an influx of migrants. Title 42 came into effect during the pandemic under the administration of former President Donald Trump. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued the order to prevent migrants at the US border, including asylum seekers, from entering the country in order to stop the spread of the disease.

El Paso, Texas has declared a “state of emergency” due to the possibility of thousands of migrants arriving every day after Title 42 expires. El Paso Mayor Oscar Leeser told a news conference Friday that “asylum seekers are not safe. We have hundreds and hundreds of them on the street and it’s not as we treat our people”.

Bensman told Newsweek that since Biden took office, border crossings have hit all-time highs and that “eliminating Title 42 is putting everything on steroids.”

On Sunday, Bream continued to press Roy during his interview about criticism that Republicans are obstructing the process at the US-Mexico border.

“You know, when the Republicans were in charge of the White House, the House and the Senate, nothing was settled, so how do you respond to these accusations?” asked Bream.

Roy replied, “Let’s go to the summer of 2018, when there were a couple of competing bills. One bill…had actual status for DACA recipients, had status for about a million people and more . [It] would have secured the border and reformed the immigration system. How many Democrats voted for? Zero.”
