LAS VEGAS — Jakobi Meyers’ inexplicable, losing fullback will get much of the attention after the Patriots’ disastrous loss to the Raiders on Sunday. But Meyers would never have been able to make this play without the equally misguided full-back Rhamondre Stevenson.
That’s the point Stevenson wanted to make in his post-game press conference.
Stevenson, who was otherwise sensational in Las Vegas, went for 23 yards on the last play of the fourth quarter, apparently intent on running out of time and sending the game into overtime. But, at the last second, the sophomore fullback headed for Meyers, who attempted a cross back pass that was caught by Chandler Jones and returned for a game-ending touchdown. The 30-24 loss knocked New England out of the AFC playoff draw with three games remaining in the regular season.
After the match, Stevenson revealed that he was not told to side the ball.
“The coaches gave us a game just to run the time out a bit, just get off,” Stevenson said. “There were only a few seconds left. So, I feel like I should have just done that and come down.
Stevenson, who rushed for 172 yards, added: “The play call was just a draw, nothing more, nothing less than that. I’m supposed to know the situation. I’m supposed to know how much time is left on the clock and critical situations. And I didn’t manage to do it today, so that’s the way it is.
Stevenson was then asked about Meyers, who was crestfallen after the game saying he was just trying to be a “hero” and make a big play.
