Nicola Sturgeon joins criticism of Jeremy Clarksons’ Duchess of Sussex article

Nicola Sturgeon is the latest high profile figure to slam Jeremy Clarkson for remarks he made in a national newspaper about the Duchess of Sussex.

The Scottish Prime Minister said she felt sorry for the former Top Gear presenter, describing his words as deeply misogynistic and downright horrifying.

Clarkson faced backlash over the article in The Sun from others including Carol Vorderman, Sir Philip Pullman and London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

In the article, Clarkson wrote that he hated Meghan and dreamed of her being paraded through British cities and publicly shamed, adding that everyone my age thinks the same way.

This follows the recent airing of Netflix’s explosive six-part documentary about Harry and Meghan, in which the couple made allegations of abuse by the royal family.

Speaking to broadcasters on Monday, Ms Sturgeon said Clarkson’s comments about the Duchess were off the mark.

I think what he said about Meghan Markle was deeply misogynistic and downright horrible and awful, she said.

I have to say, stepping back, my overwhelming emotion about guys like Jeremy Clarkson is a shame.

I mean, what makes someone so twisted with hate that they end up writing these things?

I think that maybe gives some insight into Jeremy Clarkson and the kind of person he is.

So maybe he just needs to take a step back and think about life a bit more.

Clarkson’s daughter, Emily Clarkson, said in an online post that she was against everything my dad wrote.

My opinions are and always have been clear when it comes to misogyny, bullying and the media’s treatment of women, she said in a statement shared on her Instagram story.

I want to make it very clear that I oppose everything my dad has written about Meghan Markle and that I continue to support those targeted by online hate.

Former Countdown host Vorderman said Clarkson’s comments were unacceptable under any circumstances.

Mr Khan said Clarkson’s remarks were dangerous and inexcusable, writing: As Jeremy Clarkson should know, words have consequences.

The words in his article are not a joke, they are dangerous and inexcusable.

We are in an epidemic of violence against women and girls and men with powerful voices must do better than this.

Sir Philip, author of His Dark Materials, described Clarkson as a brief loud noise and brief bad smell, but criticized Rupert Murdoch, owner of News UK, the organization that publishes The Sun.

In addition to Top Gear, Clarkson, 62, is known for his Amazon car show, The Grand Tour, which he presents alongside Richard Hammond and James May, as well as ITV’s Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?

Amazon, ITV and The Sun have all been approached for comment.

The Harry and Meghans Archewell Foundation has also been approached to comment on the remarks.
