Jeremy Clarkson has responded for the first time to the criticism he faced after slamming Meghan Markle in his column for a British publication.

In his The Sun column, the media personality wrote on Friday: Meghan is…a different story, he wrote. I hate her on a cellular level. At night I am unable to sleep as I lie there gritting my teeth and dreaming of the day when she will be forced to parade naked through the streets of every town in Britain while the crowds chant, Shame! and throw pieces of excrement at him.

Reacting to this, Samantha Selinger-Morris in her article for WA Today, said Jeremy’s remarks proved what the couple had long argued that the global media’s treatment of Meghan was particularly despicable and racist.

The former Top Gear host took to Twitter on Monday to respond to the backlash, saying: “Oh my God. I kinda stepped foot in it. In a column I wrote about Meghan, I did a clumsy reference to a scene in Game of Thrones and it went wrong with a lot of people.”

He continued: “I am horrified to have caused so much harm and will be more careful in the future.”

Jeremy Clarkson said he would be more careful going forward after widespread backlash, including criticism from his own daughter Emily.

Clarkson’s daughter, who hosts the podcast Should I Delete This?, had taken to social media to condemn her father’s comments in her column. In an Instagram story, she said, “My opinions are and always have been clear when it comes to misogyny, bullying and the media’s treatment of women.”

She continued: “I want to make it very clear that I oppose everything my dad has written about Meghan Markle and I stand in support of those targeted by online hate.”
