Rep. Kinzinger slams GOP for sheltering ‘the racist’ in explosive farewell at home

Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) lashed out at the Republican Party and slammed members for harboring ignoramuses and racists in a fiery closing speech from the House floor Thursday.

Kinzinger, a member of the Jan. 6 House Select Committee who has criticized former President Donald Trump and his supporters in the past, appeared to take aim at Trump again, this time for his recent call to end Articles of the Constitution to send him back to the White House.

The incumbent GOP lawmaker, who has served in Congress for more than a decade, declined to seek re-election this year and used his farewell speech to remind Republicans and Democrats that they should not abandon their belief in the Constitution.

We were all sworn in this same room to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States, not a political party or a single man, Kinzinger said. Let us renew this conviction while driving out those who answer the unprecedented call to abolish this sacred document.

Kinzinger then criticized Republican National Committees’ vote last year to censure him along with incumbent Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), who served as co-chair of the House Select Committee after their involvement in efforts to investigate the events surrounding the murder attack on the US Capitol just days before Trump leaves office in 2021.

He questioned leaders who downplay, and in some cases justify, attacks on the U.S. Capitol as legitimate political speech, words the RNC used to reference the events of Jan. 6 in its resolution condemning the two Republicans.

The Republican Party used to believe in a big tent, which welcomed the weary, the poor, the huddled masses yearning to breathe freely, Kinzinger said. Now we harbor the ignorant, the racists, who only stir up anger and hatred towards those who are different from us.
