KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) Some Kalamazoo city commissioners aren’t happy that it’s taking so long to implement anti-racism initiatives in city government, and at their meeting Monday night, it was suggested they have the Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. in the city charter.
Some commissioners say it would make a statement that the city is serious about stamping out racism, something they feel doesn’t now demonstrate.
Commissioner Quiana Decker.

City Attorney Clyde Robinson said amending the charter is a very complex process that requires careful wording and approval from the state attorney general, governor and city voters. He says doing it with a prescription would be easier, faster and more flexible.

Mayor Dave Anderson pointed out that the city’s 138-year-old charter still lists positions that are no longer filled.

The commissioners agreed to create a subcommittee to explore their options and come back with a recommendation over the next year.
