The City of Los Angeles’ six animal shelters have been the target of criticism for months, with volunteers and rescue organizations alleging the animals are indeed being abused and department officials conceding there aren’t enough staff to run the six shelters.

Members of the commission that oversees animal services have pressured department officials to address complaints about shelter staff turning away people trying to return animals, criticism erupted again last week.

The concerns stem from the department’s ongoing challenges, which included a double-digit increase in the number of cats and dogs housed in animal services shelters through October compared to the same period a year earlier, according to the Los Angeles Times. .

Animals are often not allowed, according to appellants at animal services commission hearings. Larry Gross, the commission’s chairman, said he was concerned about people turning away at Tuesday’s meeting.

Speakers at Tuesday’s meeting recounted instances in which shelter workers refused cats and kittens. Someone found a kitten and wanted to return it to the shelter, according to Michelle Cornelius, a volunteer at the West Valley shelter, but was advised to release it on the street unless it was injured.

The rescue organization was contacted initially, but Origer said it was already overwhelmed with more than 100 animals.

Lisa Lange, vice president of communications for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, said she’s heard from a number of people who’ve tried dropping off cats and dogs at city shelters only to be told that the animals remained in the streets.

According to Justin Khosrowabadi, spokesperson for Animal Services, shelters generally do not accept feral cats.

Animal services expect signs and brochures that will ensure volunteers, staff and the public are aware of the open admissions policy, according to Gross, the commission’s chairman, in a follow-up interview.

Animal welfare is a social duty

Millions of homes love and welcome their pets as part of the family, but many people still view these furry companions as a danger to human health and safety, according to Animals Matter to Me.

Stray animals still contribute significantly to the welfare and sanitary conditions of the nation, although they are perceived as a threat to society.

The only way stray dogs can survive is to rummage through garbage cans for leftover food. They are therefore advantageous for public cleanliness because they effectively eliminate the waste that we throw away carelessly.

Small rodents, birds, lizards and huge insects are common prey for stray cats. These creatures help stop the potential spread of disease and pests by doing this.

However, these strays lead risky lives and frequently suffer nasty human attacks, vicious scuffles with other strays, and road accidents.

They are also exposed to an unsanitary environment which could lead to health problems such as choking, suppuration of wounds, development of skin diseases, etc.

Therefore, it is our common duty to ensure the care and protection of these animals. It is a moral as well as a social obligation.
