House Speaker Nancy Pelosi banned Republicans from key security-related discussions ahead of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, according to a lengthy House GOP-led report released Wednesday.
Lawmakers say internal politics and unnecessary bureaucracy under California Democrats led the US Capitol to be unprepared for the advancing mob of rioters.
Leadership and law enforcement failures within the U.S. Capitol left the complex vulnerable on January 6, 2021, the report concludes. The Democratic-led inquiry in the House of Representatives, however, ignored those institutional failures that exposed the Capitol to violence that day.
The findings are the product of an independent investigation by Republican Representatives Jim Banks of Indiana, Jim Jordan of Ohio, Troy Nehls of Texas, Kelly Armstrong of North Dakota and Rodney Davis of Illinois, the five members appointed by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy. sit on the Democratic-led panel to investigate the Capitol attack.
Mr McCarthy later withdrew his participation on the panel after Ms Pelosi unilaterally blocked Representatives Banks and Jordan from serving.
In what largely amounts to a rebuttal of the House committees’ 18-month investigation on January 6 and the highly anticipated final report, the Republican-led report focuses squarely on the failure to secure the Capitol. , an issue that lawmakers say has been overlooked by Ms. Pelosis. sign.
Citing unnamed witnesses described in the report as US Capitol Police sources, lawmakers say they received numerous warnings about potential unrest surrounding the Jan. 6 certification of the 2020 presidential results, the failures of the United States Capitol Police, Sergeant-at-Arms, and House leadership under the Democratic Party led to insufficient police mobilization on the day of the attack.
Prior to that day, the United States Capitol Police (USCP) had obtained enough information from a range of channels to anticipate and prepare for the violence that occurred, the 141-page report states. However, frontline officers and analysts in the USCP’s intelligence division were undermined by their leadership’s misplaced priorities.
The report notes an ongoing shake-up within the USCP’s Intelligence and Interagency Division (IICD) weeks before the attack, which included the reassignment of expert intelligence analysts to new roles and the placing put in place new processes to synthesize threat data.
Lawmakers say the overhaul of units during the critical period led to the inability to warn frontline officers of threats of violence despite IICD analysts gathering intelligence indicating the need to enhanced security on January 6.
The report also says that then-House Sergeant-at-Arms Paul Irving succumbed to political pressure from the House Democratic leadership before the attack.
Rather than coordinate in any meaningful way, Irving provided information to Republicans only after receiving instructions from the Office of Presidents, the report said.
In one instance, Irving even asked a senior Democratic official to be surprised when he sent the key.
information about plans for the Jan. 6, 2021, joint session to him and his Republican counterpart, the report continues. The top Democratic official replied: I’m surprised!
The report also concludes that widespread Democrat concern over optics following the Black Lives Matter protests that spread across the country in the summer of 2020 prevented the early deployment of the National Guard on Jan. 6.
The Democratic-led House committee investigating the Capitol attack squarely blamed former President Donald Trump for the violence that took place.
Earlier this week, the panel recommended that federal prosecutors prosecute the former president for inciting the attack on Capitol Hill by the pro-Trump mob, obstructing congressional due process, conspiracy to defraud the government, and false statements about fake presidential voters. .
Mr Trump said the move was intended to derail his 2024 campaign for the White House, but predicted the move would not hurt him.
What doesn’t kill me makes me stronger, Trump said in a statement. These people don’t understand that when they come after me, people who love freedom gather around me. It strengthens me.
He said the Democrats want to block me from running for president because they know I will win and this whole thing about suing me is like impeachment is a partisan attempt to sideline me, me and the Republican Party.
Mr Trump also claimed on Monday that he pushed for 20,000 troops to prevent violence on January 6 and that I went on TV and told everyone to go home.
Although Mr. Trump was involved in pre-January 6 talks about the National Guard’s response, he gave no orders to troops before or during the riots. He released a video statement about three hours after the attack began, urging supporters to return home.
The committee also began publishing key details of its final report, including a summary and a list of witnesses who came forward throughout the investigation.
The 161-page document released Monday focuses primarily on Mr. Trump’s actions to nullify the 2020 election and what the committee said were his actions that led to the violence on Capitol Hill on Jan. 6.
The findings specifically accuse Mr. Trump of spreading false allegations of voter fraud related to the 2020 presidential race, pressuring state and local election officials following the election, summoning his supporters in Washington on January 6 and inciting violence by his supporters. at the Capitol.
None of the events of January 6 would have happened without him, the commission concludes in the report.
The committees’ final report is expected to be released later this week.
