Nepo babies: Lottie Moss hits back at criticism of nepotism

Lottie Moss has defended being a nepo baby following New York Magazine’s new nepotism-themed cover featuring Hollywood stars and their famous parents.

Moss, who is the 24-year-old half-sister of model Kate Moss, shared her thoughts on the baby nepotism debate on Twitter on Wednesday, December 21. The British model has expressed how sick she is of people blaming nepotism for their own career failures and urged her followers to focus on their own successes.

I’m so sick of people blaming nepotism for why they’re not rich, famous or successful, Moss tweeted. Obviously, it’s not fair that people who come from famous families have a head start because of this, but guess what? Life is not fair.

If you focus on one thing, you can accomplish anything! she continued. So instead of being negative about other people’s success, try creating your own!

In a separate tweet, Moss clarified that she was so grateful for the opportunities I had and admitted that she had the privilege of being linked to a huge role model. However, she added that sh****ng on others because of it makes NO sense.

Moss’s comments come after New York Magazine ran a buzzy cover story about nepotistic babies, titled The Year of the Nepo Baby, for its December 2022 issue. A nepotistic baby or colloquially known as a nepo baby are entertainment industry figures with famous or successful parents, perhaps giving them a career advantage over those without family ties.

Unsurprisingly, the publication also ran a separate article on nepo babies in the fashion industry named drop models such as Kendall Jenner, Kaia Gerber, Hailey Bieber and Lily-Rose Depp. Lila Grace Moss’ daughter Kate Moss was also mentioned in the article.

Despite her defense of nepotistic babies, Lottie Moss previously revealed that her sister Kate Moss never really supported her professionally in her modeling career.

In an Instagram post shared earlier this month, Moss wrote in the caption: I understand that I come from a very privileged position as the sister of someone very famous, but believe it or not, this no one ever really supported me, my parents were amazing but couldn’t relate to what I was going through and I didn’t know the full extent of what I was going through most of the time. I was pretty much on my own so I had to navigate on my own and do my best, which I feel like I have.

Moss isn’t the only celebrity to have spoken out against the nepo baby label. Singer and actress Lily Allen, who is the daughter of actor Keith Allen, weighed in on the debate when she warned her Twitter about real nepo babies people should be worried about.

The nepo babies you should all be worried about are those who work for law firms, those who work for banks and those who work in politics, she tweeted on Monday, December 19. If was talking about real-world consequences and depriving people of opportunities. BUT it’s none of my business.

She added: In childhood, we yearn for stability and love, for education, we don’t yet care about money or proximity to power. Many nepo babies are deprived of these basic things in childhood because their parents are probably narcissistic.

In another tweet, she wrote: And before you blame me for being a nepo baby myself, I’ll be the first to tell you that I literally don’t deserve anything.

Ahead of the New York Magazine cover, Lily-Rose Depp and Zo Kravitz both defended being nepo babies themselves. Depp, who is the 23-year-old daughter of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis, has spoken out against those who claim she has an edge in the film industry solely because of her parents.

The internet seems to care a lot about that stuff, the Voyagers actor told Elle magazine. People are going to have preconceived ideas about you or how you got here. I can definitely say that nothing will get you the part except being right for the part. The internet cares a lot more about who your family is than who throws you into things. Maybe you put your foot in the door, but you still have your foot in the door. There is a lot of work that comes after.

Meanwhile, Zo Kravtiz, who is the child of musician Lenny Kravitz and actress Lisa Bonet, admitted in a November interview with GQ that she has deep insecurities about her success as an actor being considered less because of his parents.

The Batman star also told the publication that it’s completely normal for people to be part of the family business.

This is literally where surnames come from. You were a blacksmith if your family was, like, the Black family, she said.
