Marjorie Taylor Greene says Nancy Pelosi is ‘directly responsible’ for January 6 security breaches

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) assigns some of the blame for the Capitol riot to outgoing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).

Sharing an article that detailed how Pelosi’s office was involved in the Capitol security plan that ultimately failed Jan. 6, Greene argued that the outgoing speaker should face the consequences of her role in activating the riot, prompting a heated rebuttal from Pelosi’s staff.

“Nancy Pelosi is directly responsible for the security breaches at the Capitol on Jan. 6. She blamed everyone now, she has to pay the price,” Greene tweeted.

Pelosi’s deputy chief of staff was quick to rebut Greene, blaming her for spreading lies.

“No more lies. No more threats of political violence. Where is Kevin McCarthy? He’s crawling past this extreme MAGA element of his party in a bid to become the weakest Speaker of the House in history,” the leader tweeted. of Pelosi’s deputy cabinet, Drew Hammill.

A handful of Republicans such as former President Donald Trump have long championed the idea that Pelosi was guilty of Jan. 6. Newly released documentary footage shows her on the phone urging Trump administration officials to provide reinforcements to the Capitol as it was under siege.

Underlying the article shared by Greene was a recent January 6 shadow report from a group of potential House Republican members of the January 6 committee. The report cites emails and text messages to claim that at least two key Pelosi staffers have attended regular meetings to discuss security preparations for the upcoming 2020 election certification on January 6.

Then-Sergeant-at-Arms Paul Irving, who served on the Capitol Police Board because of his position, succumbed to political pressure from Speaker Pelosi’s office and House Democratic leaders until Jan. 6 2021, according to the report. He coordinated closely with the president and his staff and kept Republicans out of important security-related discussions.

Prior to that day, the United States Capitol Police (USCP) had obtained enough information from a range of channels to anticipate and prepare for the violence that occurred, the report adds.

A bipartisan Senate committee report released last year examined the security failure surrounding the riot and found that bureaucratic procedural errors such as uncertainty over who had authority to call the Guard national had led to failure. The Senate report was followed by legislative reforms aimed at addressing some of these issues.

The January 6 committee, which looked into the root causes of the riot, is due to release its final report today after delaying the release originally scheduled for Wednesday. The panel released dozens of witness transcripts on Wednesday and issued criminal referrals to the Justice Department for some key figures such as Trump earlier this week.

Pelosi is set to step down as the House’s No. 1 Democrat after nearly two decades in the role.
