Tesla Full Self-Driving Blamed For Thanksgiving Piling In California Tunnel

A Tesla driver accuses FullSelf-Drivingsoftware of causing an eight-car pileup in California’s Yerba Buena tunnel last month, according to a police report obtained by CNN Business.

According to the Dec. 7 report obtained by CNN Business, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) reviewed tunnel footage and found that a Tesla had changed into a dangerous lane before suddenly slowing from 55 mph to 20 mph, causing the crushing of vehicles behind it.

In the report, the Tesla driver blamed the automakers’ Full Self-Driving software for allegedly malfunctioning and causing a sudden slowdown. The Thanksgiving incident resulted in nine minor injuries, including a hospitalized child.

The California Highway Patrol said in the Dec. 7 report that it could not confirm whether fully autonomous driving was active at the time of the accident. A Highway Patrol spokesperson told CNN Business on Wednesday that it would not determine whether fully autonomous driving was active, and Tesla would have that information.

Earlier this year, an NHTSA report on crashes involving vehicles with ADAS showed Tesla topped the list. Tesla said the responsibility rests with the driver for the safe operation of the vehicle operating on autopilot or full self-driving, but critics say the company overestimates the capability of its features.
