Allegation that the unity government cannot be criticized is false: Teo Nie Ching

JOHOR BAHRU: The allegation that the unity government cannot be criticized even on social media because it would lead to the blocking and prosecution of those involved is false, said Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital, Teo Nie Ching (photo).

In fact, she said people are welcome to voice their opinions and give constructive criticism, as long as they’re not breaking any laws.

I don’t know why such a perception exists because I think it’s not right.

Even the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) said he welcomes constructive criticism. He did not say that we could not criticize him, neither the ministers nor the deputy ministers.

What we are trying to emphasize here is that we don’t want hate speech, we want to protect people’s sentiment, harmony, and we don’t want any statement that violates the law, especially when it comes to 3R (race, religion, royalty) issues, she told reporters after touring the Disaster Operations Command Center at Civil Defense Force Headquarters here today.

Nonetheless, Teo said the government and relevant agencies have a responsibility to ensure that misinformation does not spread widely, especially those involving security concerns.

Regarding the lawsuit filed by the Prime Minister against several people, Teo said that the MP for Tambun was just exercising his rights.

I believe that if a politician, a prime minister, minister or deputy minister for that matter, feels defamed, he has the right to bring the person in question before the courts. Everyone has the right to do so, she said. – Bernama
